Resumen

This activity involves a two-day walk through the Colca Canyon area, beginning in Arequipa. Participants move along paths in the Andes to reach the valley floor. The route allows views of small settlements and varied terrain, with an overnight stay in a lower section featuring water sources.

The program spreads over 48 hours to cover descents and ascents. Early departure helps in covering distances before heat increases. Travelers encounter local flora and fauna during the hikes.

Communities in the valley maintain agricultural practices on terraced lands. These methods reflect long-standing adaptations to the environment. Historical elements appear in some locations.

A significant part includes observing large birds from elevated points. The position offers broad perspectives of the canyon. Guides share facts about the species and their habits.

Accommodation consists of basic structures in Sangalle. The site includes pools for refreshment. Meals occur at designated stops to sustain energy.

The second day focuses on climbing back up. Additional visits follow to thermal areas and viewpoints. Return transport brings everyone to Arequipa by evening.

Overall, this setup suits those interested in physical activity combined with cultural observations. It differs from day trips by allowing deeper immersion in the landscape.

What is the starting time for the trek?

The excursion commences with hotel collection in Arequipa between 02:30 and 03:00. This schedule ensures arrival at the Colca Canyon rim by first light, providing optimal conditions for observing condor flights and capturing sunrise photography prior to the influx of larger groups. Guests are advised to retire early the preceding evening and prepare a compact daypack in advance.

Is this suitable for beginners?

The program is rated moderately demanding and is appropriate for individuals possessing basic physical fitness.

  • Day 1: approximately 5 hours of predominantly downhill walking (1,200 m descent) across well-maintained trails.
  • Day 2: 3 hours of sustained uphill return (mule assistance available at USD 20). Prior hiking experience is beneficial but not mandatory; guides maintain a measured pace and offer trekking poles (USD 10). Participants are requested to complete a minimum of one 3-hour urban walk in the week prior to departure.

How do we handle luggage?

Only a light daypack (maximum 5 kg) is permitted on the trail. Larger suitcases are stored without charge at the operator’s secure facility in Arequipa (CCTV surveillance and insurance coverage). Upon return on Day 2, luggage is restored in its original condition.

What if it rains during the hike?

Operations continue under light precipitation. Waterproof ponchos are supplied, and trail surfaces, while temporarily slick, remain negotiable with appropriate footwear. In the rare event of heavy rainfall, the itinerary is adjusted to prioritize covered cultural sites; full refunds are issued only in cases of trail closure by local authorities.

Are vegetarian meals available?

Vegetarian and vegan selections are prepared using locally sourced organic produce at no additional cost. Advance notification is required at booking to ensure menu adaptation. Specialty international requests (e.g., gluten-free pasta) incur a supplementary fee of USD 12 per meal.

How deep is the descent?

The trail descends 1,200 vertical metres from the canyon rim (3,650 m) to the Sangalle oasis (2,150 m). The gradient is managed via 1,000 Inca-hewn stone steps and switchbacks, with rest platforms every 150 m. Geological interpretation is provided at strategic viewpoints.

  • Andean condors (wingspan up to 3.2 m)
  • Vicuñas and guanacos in highland reserves
  • Canyon swifts and variable hawks Binoculars and interpretive commentary are included.

What about hot springs visit?

The Chacapi thermal baths on Day 2 are optional (entrance S/. 15). Facilities include changing rooms and natural pools at 38 °C. Non-participants may relax in shaded gardens; the group departs promptly after 45 minutes.

Weather Conditions

Mornings in Colca stay cool, around 5 degrees Celsius, rising to 18 by midday. Wet periods from January to March bring showers, while June to August sees drier, colder days. Stats indicate average rainfall at 80 mm in February. I once hiked in light rain, which made paths slippery but views misty and calm.

Local People

Folks in Cabanaconde and San Juan speak Spanish and Quechua, showing friendliness through simple greetings. They farm terraces daily, preserving family traditions. During a stop, a resident explained crop cycles over coffee, revealing their resilient lifestyle. Listen quietly to learn.

Typical Food

Dishes include trout from rivers, potatoes, and herbs grown nearby. Quinoa soups warm after walks. Cheap meals like set menus cost 10 soles in Chivay eateries. Our tours feature organic locals, but pasta or salads add fees—ask reservations.

Free Places to Visit

Stroll Cabanaconde plazas without charges for church views. Paths near San Juan offer terrace overlooks at no cost. Reserve edges allow wildlife spotting freely. These provide extra quiet time.
